Notice: RDS Feature Horse Jump Competition
Name: Ms Sarah Ross
Telephone: 012407255
Email: arts@rds.ie
Website: http://www.rds.ie
Details:
The following brief is designed to ensure that the rules and requirements of the RDS Feature Horse Jump Competition are clear to all entrants. The RDS Feature Show Jump Design Competition is organised and sponsored by the RDS whose decision on all matters relating to the Competition will be final.

The Royal Dublin Society Equestrian Committee and Committee of Arts have come together to launch an open call for submissions for the design of a feature jump for the 2010 Dublin Horse Show. This jump may be featured in the RDS Main Arena during International competitions such as the Nations Cup for the Aga Khan trophy, International Grand Prix and various other International competitions.
This is a unique opportunity for artists and craft people in Ireland to showcase their designs and skills at one of Irelands biggest sporting and cultural events.
The winning artist or crafts person will receive an award from the RDS Committee of Arts, have their finished design on display in the Main Arena at the Dublin Horse Show, and be featured in an article in the RDS International Programme as well as press and media coverage.
Overview
The closing date for receipt of entries is Friday, March 22, 2010 before 5.00pm.
Applicants are invited to design a feature jump incorporating some aspect of Irish life, culture, landscape or other related theme. The jump will consist of two wings, one on either side of standard poles, and fillers.
There is no set size for the wings but consideration must be given to the space and material used; taking into account weight and portability of the wings/fences particularly during course changes etc. It is important to note that the obstacles must not be unsporting and they must not cause an unpleasant surprise to any athletes. An example of an unsporting or an unpleasant surprise might be flashing lights or flames of fire etc.
Since 1868, when it began on the lawns of Leinster House, the Show has grown beyond all expectations of the Royal Dublin Society who founded it to foster the equine industry in Ireland. During the five days of the Horse Show over 1,200 horses and ponies will compete in 127 competitions and classes, over 800,000 in prize money will be given out and 52 cups and trophies presented to the champions.
Being one of the best known show jumping events in the world, the Dublin Horse Show has global appeal with television coverage for some of our international show jumping events spreading to countries as far apart as China, Germany to the United States
Design Guidelines
1. Width of the jumping area: The poles should not be longer than 4 metres and should have a minimum length of 3 metres.

2. Height of the \'Filler\':
a gate or filler should not be higher than 80 cm;
fillers (either in 1, 2, or 3 pieces) should not be higher than 80 - 90 cm;
a filler should not be more than 15 cm in depth.
3. Size and shape of the \'Wings\':
the wings should ideally be no more than 1.5 metres wide and should generally be no more than 2.2 metres tall. (However, there may be exceptions made on occasion);
the wings do not have to be identical;
the wing does not have to be a full\" 1.5 x 2.2 metres, consideration must be shown to the weight and portability of all parts of the fence;
various wing shape options can be found on the CARO website.
4. At the design stage, applicants must decide on whether their design will be fabricated wholly or partially by themselves or whether the design will be fabricated by the RDS. In the case of any of these options, the design must be produced within a 3,000 budget.
5. Designs can be submitted in the form of drawings, illustrations or by using CAD. Designs must be detailed indicating structure, dimensions, material used with any specific design features. Submissions should be no larger than A3. No maquettes will be accepted. Photographic images (print/CD PC compatible) can accompany the design.
6. A synopsis of the design concept/description should be submitted and be no longer than one typed A4 page. A curriculum vitae together with a number of examples of previous work should be included also.
7. All material should be presented in a folder with all items labelled clearly.
Budget
8. The overall budget for production and fabrication of the feature fence (two wings and fillers, if applicable) is 3,000. No other costs incurred for the purpose of the design or fabrication will be covered. The award to the winning artist/crafts person is 500.
9. Designs to be fabricated by the artist must be accompanied by a detailed budget which outlines material costs, transport of work to RDS and any other details.
Selection Panel and Deadlines
10. The selection panel will consist of representatives from the RDS Equestrian Committee and Committee of Arts and an Irish International Course Designer. The selection panel will shortlist a number of designs and invite the artist/crafts person to discuss their designs in further detail.
11. Designs must be submitted before 5.00pm on March 22, 2010.
12. The selection panel will meet on April 5, 2010 to generate a shortlist of designs;
13. Final selection will take place during the first week of May 2010;
14. Production and fabrication will take place during June and July of 2010;
15. The finished article must be delivered to the RDS by August 1, 2010;
16. The Dublin Horse Show takes place from August 4-8, 2010 inclusive.
Fabrication of the Winning Design
17. The winning design (wings and fillers - if applicable) may be fabricated by the artist. The poles will be standard and will be supplied by the RDS. Alternatively, the artist may choose to have the RDS fence fabricators build the final design. In the event that the winning artist decides to work with the RDS fabricators, the design must be supplied with accurate drawings and dimensions.
18. The RDS is not responsible for alterations made to the design during the fabrication stage. Every effort will be made to adhere to the original design. There will be no communication between the artist and fabricators during the fabrication stage.
Terms and Conditions
19. Copyright of shortlisted designs belong to the artist. The RDS and its selection Committee reserve the right to not select a design and the selection panel will not enter into any correspondence regarding their decision.
20. The decision of the panel is final. No other costs incurred by entrants will be covered.

This three day course focuses on observation and interpretation of the farmed landscape through colour, movement and space. Students will draw and paint from the surrounding landscape, and after a full day’s painting, enjoy good conversation over a yummy home cooked dinner.
The fee includes tuition, some materials, accommodation (room shared with one person), and all meals; from arrival dinner on Thursday night to Sunday lunch.

Phil Evans & The Little Ghost

From the 26th of March until the 2nd of April Mr Phil Evans will be taking over The Little Ghost Gallery with his first solo show which he has been working away on into the wee hours. Phil is a good friend of the gallery having exhibited with us before in the \"Toys of Christmas Past\" show, now he is going to completely take over the place and do his own thing.

Phil says the show is \"A tongue in cheek look at having to supposedly comply to mob mentality in many aspects of life and society today. I\'m going to have a lot of new work on display that I\'ve been flat out on for the last while. As well as that, Bray beat bustawill be providing smoove grooves on the night and also debuting his first album, good show. There\'s a few extra little treats in store for the night in question to make it different from the usual well trodden opening night stuff, but you\'ll have to turn up to find out!\"

I don\'t know about you, but I\'m going to be dancing my pants off to Luke\'s serious tunes and more TUNES, now come party the night away with us square pants! Then look over the road to our nearest B&B and fall in the door.

This warm and cozy studio space beside “The Little Ghost Gallery” is up for rent and would comfortably house at least 3 - 4 artists.
The room is split into three bright spaces, a large, a medium and a small room. The small room to the front could be used as a dark room if it’s needed. The space is unfurnished but has a large built in storage closet. Gas heating and the electricity can be run off a meter and artists have 24 hours access to the studio.

This spacious studio looks out onto the hill up to Canice\'s Cathedral and is 10 min form Bennetsbridge and 20 min from Thomastown. With a few other artists this space would be perfect and a gallery next door, what more do you need?!

Website: http://littleghostgallery.com/
Details:
The Little Ghost Gallery is looking for new artistic neighbours. We are hoping to build up an artist community in and around the area of the Coach Road on the way up to St Canice’s Cathedral and Dean Street. This area has many properties to let and many empty office and shop front that we feel are going to waste. This is where we feel the artistic community can step in and create an established artistic ghetto of sorts.

There is a great studio space beside the gallery up for rent and we are hoping to get artists in make a creative atmosphere. The room is split into three spaces, one large, one medium and one small. There is a storage closet and the small room to the front could be used as a dark room if it’s needed. It’s a cosy little space and looks out onto the hill up to Canice’s Cathedral.

The space is ideal for an artist studio and would comfortably house at least 3 - 4 artists. The space is unfurnished but I\'m sure there would be a skip you can steal from somewhere. There is Gas heating and the electricity can be run off a meter if it suits you better than a bill.

Kilkenny is becoming a great place to set up shop as an artist. Since the new by-pass went in Dublin is less than an hour and a half away. Its 20 min from Thomastown and 10 min form Bennetsbridge. Perfect. If you’re an artist wanting to set up a new artist collective with a few other artists this space would be perfect and you have a gallery next door, what more do you need?

If you or someone you know would be interested in renting this space please contact us at the Little Ghost Gallery by emailing us at littleghostgallery@gmail.com and please pass it on to anyone you know who may be interested.
