Wexford County Council welcomes the announcement that Wexford Opera House has been renamed to The National Opera House, Wexford.

On Wednesday, 22nd October, during the official opening of the 63rd annual Wexford Festival Opera, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphries TD, announced the renaming of Wexford Opera House to The National Opera House, Wexford.

Wexford County Council welcomes this significant announcement and looks forward to continuing to work with The National Opera House, Wexford, in strengthening the artistic infrastructure of County Wexford.

Comment from Cllr. Malcolm Byrne, Chairman of Wexford County Council “It is significant that Wexford has now been designated as the National Opera House and this will help build its international profile. We are very proud of this County’s growing global reputation as a centre for the arts.”

Cllr. George Lawlor, Mayor of Wexford remarked “The rename will further enhance the Cultural Spine of Wexford Town. There is no doubt over Wexford’s position as the pinnacle and home of National Opera.”

John Carley, Director of Services said. “This is an important development, from a local perspective and certainly from a national and international viewpoint.”  He added “I have no doubt that the title National will add to the County’s toolset for attracting world class arts events to County Wexford.”
